Some history of Packet Radio
Around in Late 1978 the Department of Communications authorized the transmitting of "Packet radio"
Doug Lockhart VE7APU had been working on a TNC called the VADCG board.
He had also formed a the VADCG - Vancouver Amateur Digital Communications Group

The US had several early groups PPRS  Pacific Packet Radio Society and AMRAD Amateur Radio Reseach and Development Corporation.
In 1981 TAPR was formed Tucson Amateur Packet Radio Corporation.
From these groups they came up with a modified X25 protocol for Amateur radio called AX25.
TAPR released the first kit based TNC in 1983

In 1984 there was development on what was known as a PBBS - Packet Bulletin Board

And the rest is history!
